So, What Do You Do?

Are we defined by “what we do?” I was asked by someone the other day what I did. What does that mean? Social etiquette would have one assume in this modern day and age, the question posed means, “What do you do for a living?” However, is that the kind of question you ask a stranger….someone you barely know, someone with whom you have just met?

Having had that question presented to me a thousand times over the years, I still get taken aback for a moment and have to ask myself, “Does this individual who knows nothing about me really want to hear the details of my day to day existence or it that we are just too lazy to further continue intelligent conversation?” Asking a person “What do you do” really means, “Please be brief, I can’t think of anything better to say and I am just trying to be polite!” YIKES!

So, the next time someone asks me, “What do you do,” I am going to give a much more colorful answer by saying,  “I live life. I create. I am an artist. I am inspired. I ride in my car with the top down and let the wind blow through my hair. I listen to Mozart and Beach Music. I laugh a lot when no one is around. I find beauty in the clouds. I let my dogs eat my ice cream cone. I sing. I dance. I cry. I love. I smile at people I don’t know. I give thanks. I believe anything is possible if you only believe. I try new things. I listen to others and share in their joy. I do a lot and still have more to do…..

…..that’s what I do! So, what do you do?
